Snip, snip, hooray!
Slide furniture across a rug and what happens? Snagging. The same thing goes for if your cat or dog’s claws are too long and they get stuck in the rug’s fibers. They can easily pull the threading up without even meaning to. The easiest way to rid yourself of this problem is to take a pair of sharp scissors and snip those fly aways away.
Use shaving cream
Stains will easily age your carpet a few years, but the oldest and most reliable trick in the book is to use shaving cream. It’ll get everything out! Grease, lipstick, wine, etc. bring your carpet back to life with a little dab here and a little dab there. Leave the shaving cream on for approximately 30 minutes and then just blot it dry with a cloth.
Purchase a rake
Not any old rake – you’re not looking to scoop up some leaves in your living room. Purchase a carpet rake at a local appliance store. You know, one with small plastic or metal teeth. Rake the carpet towards you for the best appearance. Just don’t use these on a woven carpet if that’s what you’re working with.
Start fluffing
Matted carpets look dull and lifeless, but you can easily brighten up their personality. Just spray a little bit of warm water on the matted areas and blow-dry it with a hairdryer. Fluffing the carpet will easily put the fibers back into place naturally, you’ll just need to use a little bit of magic from your fingers. Or if you prefer a hairpin, that’s fine, too. Just make sure you don’t walk on the carpet while it’s wet, because all that hard work would’ve been for nothing.
Go get yourself a paint brush
This sounds like a very odd suggestion, at first. Give us the opportunity to explain. Redecorate the room with your musty old carpet. Paint the walls a more neutral tone to make the carpet not stand out as much. Super easy suggestion – and a can of paint doesn’t cost all that much.
Focus on clearing out the smell
This option may not improve the appearance of the carpet, but it will definitely take care of that smell you can’t get rid of. Just buy yourself a lovely smelling deodorizer and spray it onto the carpet, allow to sit, and adhere to the remaining directions. If you prefer a DIY solution, all you need is baking soda. Sprinkle that all over the carpet and let it sit for a few hours. Once time has passed, vacuum the baking powder up and you’ll have a great new scent filling the room.
Get rid of carpet indentations
If furniture stays in one spot for too long, an indentation is bound to happen. But how do you get rid of these annoying marks? Begin by running the vacuum over them. This may immediately fix the problem, but it also may not. It all depends on how deep they are. The next step would be to place ice cubes on top of the indentations. As they melt, the coldness will help the fibers regain their original shape and position. Super easy solution and only takes a few minutes.
